Automatic tool changer (ATC)

Automatic tool changing, or ATC (for “Automatic Tool Changer” in English), is an option on our CNC milling machines that allows the machine to change tools automatically and without human intervention. This function is particularly useful in complex milling applications where several different tools are required to machine a part.

The operation of an automatic tool changer on a CNC milling machine is as follows: the machine is equipped with a tool magazine containing several different tools, each mounted in a tool holder with an ISO30 taper. When the milling program, via an M-Code command, indicates that it is time to change tools, the machine controller positions the spindle at the tool magazine. It releases the current tool into an empty slot and inserts a new one in its place. (See also linear tool magazine.)

The tool change takes place in a few seconds thanks to compressed-air quick-clamping mechanisms that allow the tool-holder tapers to be gripped and released quickly. Once the tool has been changed, the milling machine can continue operating normally by following the instructions of the milling program.

Automatic tool changing offers many advantages for the CNC milling machine user. First, it saves time because the machine does not need to be stopped to change tools manually. In addition, it delivers better results by ensuring perfect repositioning before resuming the program. Finally, it reduces the risk of accidents that can occur during manual tool changes.
