Spindle cooling improves spindle lifespan by reducing wear caused by heat. Excessive heat can damage spindle materials and components such as bearings and copper coils, affecting their operation. Air or water cooling helps dissipate the heat generated by the spindle during operation and extends its service life.

Cooling also enhances the performance of the CNC milling spindle. When the spindle operates at high temperatures, it can become less efficient and less precise. Maintaining a low temperature ensures greater accuracy and a constant spindle rotation speed.
Finally, cooling ensures user safety by eliminating the risk of burns.

Air or Water Cooling

There are primarily two types of cooling for a CNC milling spindle: air cooling and water cooling.

Air cooling uses a fan to force ambient air into the spindle, thereby cooling its various components. This system is easy to use as it starts and stops simultaneously with the spindle. Its maintenance is also very simple and inexpensive, requiring virtually no intervention. However, this method can be less effective than water cooling for CNC milling spindles operating at high speeds.

Water cooling, on the other hand, uses water or a coolant to cool the milling spindle. This method is more effective than air cooling for spindles operating at high speeds, as water can absorb contact heat better than air. However, water cooling requires the use of an industrial cooling unit, which can be more complex to set up and requires regular maintenance.

In summary, the choice between air and water cooling for a CNC milling spindle primarily depends on the speed at which the spindle operates. If the spindle operates at high speeds, water cooling is generally recommended for better efficiency. Otherwise, air cooling is perfectly suitable.
